Dental health is the most important reason to have teeth straightened. Tooth decay and gum disease are more likely to develop if teeth and jaws don’t line up properly.

Of course, orthodontics can also make your teeth look better!

Your dentist may recommend braces to realign crowded or crooked teeth. Before making that decision, the dentist will examine your profile, teeth, and jaws and watch how you bite and swallow. Your medical and dental histories, x-rays, impressions, and photos will all be examined to determine whether you can benefit from braces.

Everyone’s jaw structure is unique. Your dentist will design orthodontic treatment that will be custom-made - just for you. Some appliances are fixed and remain in place throughout the treatment period. Others are removable - it’s up to you to wear your orthodontic device when you are supposed to!

Alignment problems can’t be solved overnight. How long a treatment takes depends on the nature of the problem, the patient’s cooperation in wearing the appliance, and whether other kinds of treatment are needed. Usually, there will be a 2-3 year period of active treatment followed by 2-3 more years of retention treatment.
